Power BI project - STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result).

Project Name: Sales Performance Dashboard

1. Situation (Background)

"In my previous role, the sales team lacked a clear and real-time view of performance metrics across regions and products. They relied on static Excel reports which were time-consuming and lacked interactivity."

2. Task (Objective)

"I was tasked with creating an interactive Power BI dashboard to track key sales KPIs like revenue, profit, sales growth, and regional performance — to help management make quicker, data-driven decisions."

3. Action (What you did)

  • Connected to data sources like Excel files and SQL Server databases.

  • Cleaned and transformed data using Power Query.

  • Created relationships between tables in the data model.

  • Built DAX measures like Total Sales, YoY Growth, and Profit Margin.

  • Designed interactive visuals like bar charts, slicers, and drill-through pages.

  • Implemented row-level security so regional managers could see only their data.

4. Result (Impact)

"The dashboard reduced reporting time by 70% and gave the leadership team real-time access to performance insights. It also improved sales strategy alignment across regions, which helped boost quarterly sales by 15%."

Bonus Tips:

  • Use clear, non-technical language unless the interviewer is technical.

  • Be ready to share a few key visuals you created (even screenshots if allowed).

  • Know how to answer follow-up questions like:

    • "What DAX formulas did you use?"

    • "How did you handle data refresh?"

    • "Did you publish to Power BI Service and configure scheduled refresh?"
